With any open or public wifi connection, there are risks for travelers connecting to a network at a place like at an airport or even a coffee shop. Here are some safety tips from the Better Business Bureau:
- Never connect to an unfamiliar network, even if the name sounds legit. A hacker can change the name of a network to anything they want including the name of an honest connection offered by the airport or retail store. Just because the network is using the same WiFi name advertised, don’t believe it. Check with an employee first.
- Make sure your computer is not set up to automatically connect to non-preferred networks. Your computer could automatically connect to a dangerous network without you even knowing and expose your computer.
- Turn off “file sharing” while you are on the road so intruders cannot steal entire documents, files and unencrypted email from your computer.
So make sure you’re protecting you and your families While you’re watching the waves roll in on the beach, we’ll be watching all the things that matter to you here at home.
Go ahead, relax, we’ve got you covered!
